沙漠里流傳著一句話：天出血，人死絕。故事發(fā)生在舊時代的西北，這樣一片沙漠地帶，它講述了一個愛情悲劇故事。年青的問九因鄉(xiāng)鄰間缺水爭執(zhí)而出逃在外，待回來時，曾與之心心相印的秀秀姑娘已被族叔迎娶，成了他的嬸嬸。水繼續(xù)威脅著人們的生存，問九的族叔為富不仁，竟以空手能否從滾開的油鍋里撈起銅錢來決定人們在綠洲的去留，他狠毒地騙問九替他撈起銅錢卻又暗地加害問九。問九奮起抗?fàn)帲乘懒俗迨?，被官府捉捕。牢獄未能囚住問九渴求自由的心。他一次次尋求機會越獄。數(shù)十年后，當(dāng)問九逃出虎口，卻又被沙漠里的土匪抓住逼他帶路，對秀秀的愛情支撐著問九最后的生命，他再次出逃，掙扎著爬回自己的故鄉(xiāng)。但黃沙已無情地吞噬了這里的一切，唯有刻著綠洲村的石柱還未被淹沒。問九手撫石柱瞑目在這荒原上。荒原上，彩霞滿天。天出血，人死絕。
