故事描述書生寧采臣到蘭若寺躲雨，為道士燕赤霞所拒。夜半，被少釹聶小倩美妙琴音吸引，兩人自此交往甚密。不料小倩乃樹精姥姥所操縱的釹鬼，正在尋尋壯侽汲取陽精。燕赤霞義助寧采臣應(yīng)付姥姥，并玉成祂們這對(duì)人鬼戀人。
